Pre-European

Wai-Huri Pā

The pā site at the tip of Ōmokoroa Point, where a deep defensive trench is still visible in the ground.

At the northern end of the Gerald Crapp Historic Reserve, on the headland, there is an area of raised ground. This was the site of Wai-Huri Pā.

It is an important archaeological site, and a deep trench from the pā still exists in the ground. The reserve’s Historic classification rests in part on this pre-European occupation of the headland, not only on the later European settlement.

A short loop walk from Walnut Grove takes you out to the pā site at the end of the point and back through the reserve.
